What are Incoterms\u00ae\u00a0rules?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Incoterms\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0rules are the world\u2019s essential terms of trade for the sale of goods. Whether you are filing a purchase order, packaging and labelling a shipment for freight transport, or preparing a certificate of origin at a port, the Incoterms\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0rules are there to guide you. The Incoterms\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0rules provide specific guidance to individuals participating in the import and export of global trade on a daily basis.<\/p>\n

Who publishes the Incoterms\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0rules?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Since its founding in 1919, ICC has been committed to the facilitation of international trade.<\/p>\n

Different practices and legal interpretations between traders around the world necessitated a common set of rules and guidelines. As a response, ICC published the first Incoterms\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0rules in 1936. We have been maintaining and developing them ever since.<\/p>\n

The world business organization was pleased to announce the publication of\u00a0Incoterms\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a02020,\u00a0<\/em>as\u00a0ICC celebrated its Centenary in 2019. The newest edition of the Incoterms\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0rules will help prepare business for the next century of global trade.<\/p>\n

Why use<\/strong>\u00a0Incoterms\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0rules in international trade?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Although other clauses for global trade exist around the world, such as the Harmonised Tariff Schedule of the United States, Incoterms\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0rules are global in their reach. Similarly, Incoterms\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0rules do not include trade terms codified for national purposes, such as the \u201cless than truckload shipping\u201d (LTL) rule of the United States. Unlike national trade policies, Incoterms\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0rules are universal, providing clarity and predictability to business.<\/p>\n

What does<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cIncoterms\u00ae<\/sup>\u201d stand for?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u201cIncoterms\u00ae<\/sup>\u201d is an acronym standing for international commercial terms. \u201cIncoterms\u00ae<\/sup>\u201d is a trademark of the International Chamber of Commerce, registered in several countries.<\/p>\n

The Incoterms\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0rules feature abbreviations for terms, like FOB (\u201cFree on Board\u201d), DAP (\u201cDelivered at Place\u201d) EXW (\u201cEx Works\u201d), CIP (\u201cCarriage and Insurance Paid To\u201d), which all have very precise meanings for the sale of goods around the world.<\/p>\n

These terms hold universal meaning for buyers and sellers around the world. If you are a financial analyst in the City of London, then you might associate the acronym \u201cFCA\u201d with the United Kingdom\u2019s Financial Conduct Authority. However, for importers and exporters around the world, FCA is the initials used for \u201cFree Carrier,\u201d or the seller\u2019s obligation to deliver the goods to the carrier nominated by the buyer at the seller\u2019s premises or another named place.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>
